History of NEWHAM

From a small Roman town to one of the most vibrant and multicultural boroughs in England, the area now called Newham has a long and rich history. Lets take a quick sneak peak at My Borough and celebrate its achievements throughout the years!

Did You Know???
In 1086 The Domesday Book recorded the Manor of West Ham to have a population of just 130? Bet you did not!

In 1723 the first school was opened in the area called West Ham Church School.
Newham is now home to over a tremendous 92 schools, including nurserys and special care annexe schools.

In 1895 Thames Iron Works football team (later to become West Ham United) played their first match? And five years later in 1900 West Ham United football team were founded? If you didnt, you do now!

Did You Know???
This is the one all West Ham United fans will have been waiting for...in 1980, West Ham United beat Arsenal 1-0 in the FA Cup Final! Yesssssssssssssssssss!

Did You Know???
Yep we also have our own uni dedicated to us, in 1992 The University of East London was founded.

Then the Millennium hits us and did that have great things in store or what?!

Year of the pre-Millenium, Stratford-born Lennox Lewis became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in 1999. Yes, you read right, he was born and bred in Stratford!

The year of the Millennuim brought greater fortune as the Excel Conference and Exhibition Centre was opened next to Royal Victoria Dock, one of many situated around Newham. The Excel has entertained the locals in many ways, from Muslim GPU events to Nigerian Republican days, to Star Wars memoribilia shows!

THE BIG X FACTOR
In 2001, Newham was named as the most ethnically diverse borough in Britain in the 2001 census figures with more than 110 languages spoken. A great achievement for a place where only 130 people were once populating.

And finally in 2005, London won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Newham celebrates as a host borough, where in our very own Stratford, the Games shall be held...
